Power Flushing may be necessary when you have a sludge build up in your heating system or as a requirement of having a new boiler installed.
The objective is to restore systems with circulation and boiler noise problems (caused by sludge and corrosion deposits) to optimum operation. Power flushing removes these deposits and the problems that they cause.
This is a process which heating systems are forcibly cleansed using water at high velocity, but low pressure, so that no physical damage is caused to the system.
Most Boiler manufacturers recommend that a heating system is power flushed immediately before fitting a new boiler to an existing system, to prevent possible future problems, and failure to do this may invalidate your Boiler Warranty. Many systems are found to contain corrosion and sludge, even if no flow problems have yet shown themselves.
Existing debris is often mobilised by alterations carried out to the pipework as well as the increased efficiency of the new boiler, and may then accumulate in the boilers heat exchanger, causing noisy operation, reduced efficiency and, in extreme circumstances, failure of the boiler. The high efficiency and compactness of modern boilers, developed to minimize fuel costs and pollution, means that they are more susceptible to problems caused by debris in the system water.
An alternative way to clean your system is to add a chemical cleaner and allow to circulate for about 1 week after which the system is drained down and flushed with clean water. Sludge will build up in areas of your heating system, and will solidify in a similar way to that of sediment on a river bed. This will not be removed effectively unless the high velocity of power flushing is employed.
Power flushing is a complex procedure that should be carried out correctly in order to remove as much of the system debris as possible. It is also vital that the correct chemicals are used in order to optimize the outcome, and to prevent damage to your Boiler.
